Setz – Always a Winner

It’s one of those places you can keep going back to and not be disappointed. There’s something for everyone! We were there for a family dinner recently . . .

The vegetarians decided to eat oriental food, because it’s pretty amazing at Setz. This was after a kiwi and vodka cocktail, a dim sum or two, and a slice of seriously good pizza. The lotus stem salad was so light and refreshing with the perfect amount of acidity, sweetness and chilly.

setz7-the-family-tableI could eat a bowl of their seasonal veggies in Szechuan sauce every day. But I shared it this evening. The Thai green curry was delicious, though I found it quite chilli hot.

setz4-the-family-tableThe best part of the meal! We went with three flavours of their hand made ice cream. I cannot stress how good the vanilla ice cream is here. I never order vanilla, but this one tastes of vanilla bean and its fantastic. The chocolate was dark and delicious, and the strawberry sorbet like a bite of pureed strawberries. There was also a caramelised walnut which was an amped up version of the vanilla with caramelized walnuts generously thrown in. Perfect ending to a lovely meal.

I love the Setz bread basket! They really make it count and it sets the expectation for the meal you will be eventually having. The standout dish for me were the spicy chicken dimsums. They were moist and juicy in and left you craving for more. For my main course I tried the parsley crusted seabass fillet which was cooked to perfection. It was served on a bed of spinach along with a mustard cream sauce, which went very well with the fish. The fish fillet was a good size. The ravioli stuffed with chicken in tomato sauce was flavourful.

Setz offers a wide variety of cuisine, but I always find myself gravitating towards Asian. I would love to just have my fill of sashimi, sushi or dimsums along with some soup and some small accompaniments. In most international restaurants this usually comes as a set. This is one trick that Setz is missing. If I was to order everything individually, I would be fairly disappointed by the small portions and the high prices. Even their weekend buffet doesn’t solve the problem since they have a limited selection of sushi and sashimi is completely excluded! Charge more, but let me have a free run at the fatty tuna and the salmon! Make it a contest?
